The Action Plan

Get a personalized guide for how you can move to Japan with your remote income.

What Is The Action Plan?

An Action Plan from Japan Remotely is a customized document that acts as your personal roadmap for living in Japan while working remotely. It's tailored to your unique situation and helps you figure out how to make it happen.

If you've got a steady source of remote income or savings, this document will show you how to live in Japan and work from there. It's all about answering the question: "How can I work remotely while living in Japan?

In order to answer that question, we’ll dive deep with you into three main areas to design your strategy: lifestyle design, business strategy, and visa strategy.

Lifestyle Design

1 / 3

We’ll start with the fun part: dreaming! What do you want your life in Japan to look like? Do you want to buy an akiya in the countryside and semi-retire with a few fun projects to maintain your lifestyle? How about hanging out on the beach of Okinawa while running an ecommerce business with partners in nearby Taiwan?

To design your best life, we’ll look at these factors:

Urban vs rural

Rent vs buy

Work-life balance

Japanese cultural experiences

Climate preference

Health goals

Travel goals (domestic and international)

Family

Learning Japanese vs English assistance

Cost of living

Desired length of time in Japan

Timing of your move

Ability to be outside one’s comfort zone

Business Design

2 / 3

What do you do for money? Can you continue doing that same thing in Japan? Do you want to start a new project? Are you interested in growing your business in the Japanese market? Perhaps you want to take your current side project and make it your full-time job with lower cost of living and higher social security.

Japan has a lot of opportunities. To find out what works for you we’ll discuss:

The nature of the work/activity you want to do in Japan

Same job vs new project

Desire/ability to expand into the Japanese market

Downshifting vs accelerating

Business structure (employment, self-employed, joint venture, owning a company)

Tax implications

Viability of current income/assets once in Japan

Budget for life and business in Japan

Any existing business connections or partnerships

Current income

Hiring help (expert partners, translators, assistants, etc)

Visa Design

3 / 3

The two sections above will be the framework around which we decide what visa is best for your situation. Japan does not have a true digital nomad visa, but similar benefits can be achieved depending on what it is you want to do while in Japan and how long you want to be there. In general, the more interest you have in Japan the better!

In most cases, I suggest either a work visa or an investor/management visa, but there are some key factors to consider when deciding a more detailed strategy:

Do you want permanent residency quickly?

Would you be willing/able to partner with a local Japanese company?

If you’d rather start a company, do you have US$50K to put up as capital?

Are you able to pay your own Japanese taxes or do you need it taken out of payroll?

Are you ready to pay rent for office space?

Do you want to minimize Japanese taxes or are you ready to contribute more to their system?

1:1 Consultation

Japan Remotely’s Action Plan is built in collaboration with you. We think of as many possible variables for designing your entry into Japan, but this is a two-way street. Our discovery session is serious business and it is all about you.

Japan Experience

We know what it’s like to move to Japan. It’s exciting, it’s scary, but no matter what it is an adventure. Our Action Plan can take some of the edge off of being at the edge of the unknown. For example, the places people love as a tourist might not be the same places you want to go to bed every night. Our extensive knowledge of Japanese locations, including inaka (rural areas), can help you pick the right place to live and conduct your work.

Legal Partners

Japan Remotely partners closely with the Japanese law firm Small Seasons for immigration analysis on all Action Plans. What we come up with will satisfy our client’s needs while being on the right side of the law.

Akiya Passion

One of the best things about living in Japan is the ability to buy and live in a cheap house full time. Imagine paying less than $100K to never have to pay rent or a mortgage ever again! Each Action Plan comes with a 1 year subscription to the cheaphousesjapan.com newsletter and downloadable guide “How to Buy A House In Japan.” Once we pick options for your location, you can scan the newsletters for a cheap house in your area!

Network in Japan

Japan Remotely has an extensive network of business contacts in Japan in various fields that are standing by to help our clients. Many of the simpler paths to living and working in Japan require having a local business partner. After we deliver the Action Plan, with your permission we will reach out to our network to talk about your goals and see if there is a match to help you achieve them.
